The Fort Wayne community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Michael Vebert, 46, who tragically died on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, following a collision with a semi-tractor-trailer in Marshall County, Indiana.
Investigators reported that Michael was driving his 2008 Mercury Sable eastbound on State Road 8 near State Road 17 when his vehicle failed to yield to a southbound 2018 Freightliner semi, operated by 61-year-old Mitchell Sailor. The impact claimed Michael’s life at the scene, where he was pronounced deceased. The semi driver was unharmed and declined medical treatment. Two passengers in Michael’s vehicle—an adult in the front seat and a juvenile in the back—were transported to Memorial Hospital of South Bend with injuries and remain under medical care. First responders, including the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Plymouth Fire/EMS, Culver EMS, and the Marshall County Coroner’s Office, worked together at the scene.
Michael is remembered by family, friends, and neighbors as a devoted family member, loyal friend, and caring community member. His warmth, laughter, and generous spirit left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
Funeral arrangements will be shared by his family in the coming days. The community is encouraged to keep Michael, his loved ones, and all affected by this tragedy in their thoughts and prayers. Though his life was cut far too short, Michael’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those in Fort Wayne and beyond.
